I think it was funny because of the way the story went.I choose this book because of the way he said the story and i like zoo's to.The genre is fiction. But really good kids books are accessible to kids but wonderful for all ages, and this definitely did not fill that bill. I can imagine some younger kids would like it. It's definitely a kids book that's very much for kids. But it was quick, and the writing was competent. Then they have to take care of the animals, hide them from their parents and the world, while trying to find them good permanent homes. No-one will help them get the monkey back, so they take matters into their own hands, but end up stealing all the animals in the zoo, instead of just getting back the monkey. The kids discover the culprit is the owner of a floating, travelling zoo. I was hoping for something more clever and funny. I've read some reviews where people are concerned about the kind of role models and messages that this might send out to our kids. And the "brains" behind the gang is "The Man With The Plan." The plans, of course, go terribly awry. The characters in the gang are defined by their abilities: there's the climber, the small space guy, the computer wiz, etc. It's a kid's caper book, and it has about all the substance that you would expect from a caper book. And there is one simple fact that most of us are utterly scared to meditate, reflect on and face head on: We are going to die. Or, we are simply petrified to look at life’s facts as they are. Most often, our ego runs away from anything that reminds us of the reality that sits at odds with the comfortable narrative we have build for ourselves. It is reminders like this one that we desperately need in our own lives-a thought or an idea that we’d rather ignore, do everything to avoid and pretend is not true. Only a few would notice the aide in the back, right behind the commander, whispering into his ear, “Remember, thou art mortal.” What a reminder to hear at the peak of glory and victory! … The one who puts the finishing touches on their life each day is never short of time.” SenecaĪt a Roman triumph, the majority of the public would have their eyes glued to the victorious general at the front-one of the most coveted spots during Roman times. “Let us prepare our minds as if we’d come to the very end of life. Ashe’s analysis of several sources from Roman Gaul, sources from Britain closer to Arthur’s time, and history of the last Western Roman Empire together with clues from Geoffrey’s histories help Ashe narrow in on the individual who was the starting point of the Arthur mythos, the Briton High King named Riothamus.Īfter naming this candidate whose career inspired the Arthur legend, Ashe then details how over the centuries to Geoffrey of Monmouth and afterwards the embellished and fantasies were created about an individual who seemingly revived Roman Briton’s fortunes and was seen on the Continent as someone to help restore the civilization-as the Roman was viewed. Ashe begins dissecting Geoffrey’s account through the lens of various sources during the supposed time of Arthur’s career as well as giving context to the nature of medieval literary work thus gleaming clues to the real events that Geoffrey based his writing on. One of the most preeminent Arthurian scholars in the world, Ashe’s thesis brought the possibility of a real Arthur to the public by guiding them through the layers of myth and legend.Īshe begins his presentation by establishing how the Arthur we have come to know in was first widely distributed, through Geoffrey of Monmouth’s “Histories of the Kings of Britain”. The question of the reality of King Arthur has been answered in various ways and Geoffrey Ashe gives his answer in “The Discovery of King Arthur”. The tone of Rationality isn’t as relentlessly chipper as that of the previous book, but Pinker’s optimism seems to have weathered the Trump years and the pandemic largely intact. Some of Pinker’s observations on racial issues are similarly blinkered. The trouble arrives when he tries to gussy up his psychologist’s hat with his more elaborate public intellectual’s attire. When Pinker is dealing with abstract puzzles involving small-stakes situations, the book is familiar but fine. Pinker spends page after page walking us through concepts like 'base-rate neglect' (giving too little weight to the original probability of an event in the face of new information) and the 'availability heuristic' (guessing the likelihood of an event according to what comes easily to mind).
